The US has demanded compensation from North Korea over its alleged cyberattack on the Sony Pictures Entertainment company amid growing tensions between the two countries.

US State Department deputy spokesperson Marie Harf said on Monday that Pyongyang must compensate for the damages it caused by hacking the Culver City, California-based company in November.

"As the FBI and the [US] president and everyone has now made clear, we are confident that the North Korean government is responsible for this destructive attack. We stand by this conclusion," Harf said.

"The government of North Korea has a long history of denying its destructive and provocative actions and if they want to help here they can admit their culpability and compensate Sony for the damage, damages that they caused," she added.

Following the accusations, Pyongyang threatened to launch strikes against the White House, the Pentagon and the whole US mainland.
