According to a report on Monday by the Global Times, which is run by the Communist Party’s People’s Daily, Chinese militants from Xinjiang had recently been involved in ISIL activities in Syria and Iraq.
The report added that the Chinese militants had also been involved with other “branches” of the terrorist group in Southeast Asia.
"They not only want to get training in terrorist techniques, but also to expand their connections in international terrorist organizations through actual combat to gain support for escalation of terrorist activities in China," the report quoted an unidentified Chinese "anti-terrorism worker" as saying.
Meanwhile, analysts say the militants’ ultimate goal is to return and fight in China after seeking training.
This comes just days after two people were killed and several others wounded after a number of bomb explosions hit three different places in southern areas of Luntai County in Xinjiang Province.
China’s Xinjiang region, home to the mostly Muslim Uighur minority, has witnessed deadly violence for years.
The Chinese government has often blamed the unrest on the Uighur minority, but they have denied the accusations.
