Iran wants IAEA talks to speed up: Official

An Iranian nuclear official says Iran wants its discussions with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to proceed more quickly toward a positive outcome.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran would like the negotiations (with the IAEA) to speed up and reach a conclusion as soon as possible because all of Iran’s nuclear activities are peaceful,” said Behrouz Kamalvandi, who is the deputy for international affairs at the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI).

Kamalvandi described his Monday meeting with IAEA Director Yukiya Amano as “positive,” saying the two sides stressed the importance of continuing cooperation.

“It was decided that the negotiations (should) lead to a tangible outcome and that they shouldn’t become an endless process,” the Iranian nuclear official said.

The talks should ultimately lead to a mutually agreed and clear endpoint, Kamalvandi said.

Iran and the IAEA have been holding talks on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program almost simultaneous with discussions between Iran and the P5+1 – the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany – on the same issue.

The Islamic Republic seeks to allay Western concerns regarding its nuclear energy program and, in return, see the sanctions imposed against the country lifted.

The nuclear negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 yielded an interim agreement in the Swiss city of Geneva in November 2013.

Earlier, a monthly report by the IAEA confirmed that Iran has been complying with the terms of the interim nuclear agreement.

Iranian nuclear negotiators, headed by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, have traveled to New York to continue the nuclear discussions on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the UN General Assembly. The two sides have set November 24 as the deadline to reach a long-term deal.
