Al-Alam correspondent reported, after fierce fighting with ISIL militants, Iraqi army troops and Kurdish Peshmerga forces retook full control of Mahmur strategic region.
Iraqi forces inflicted heavy blows on the ISIL militants, forcing them to retreat from the region and flee to other parts of Nineveh province.
Iraqi army’s Fifth Division and Kurdish Peshmerga forces are in the region, setting up military checkpoints and posts to counterattack any possible ISIL attack.
Army soldiers and Kurdish forces fought a fierce battle with terrorists in Mahmur region and killed scores of terrorists, forcing them to escape. The region is under our full control now, an Iraqi soldier told Al-Alam.
Iraq has faced brutal violence by ISIL across the country’s north and west since early June. The crisis has deteriorated in recent weeks, as the militants have swept over new towns in the north, forcing members of the minorities out of their homes.
The ISIL terrorists have been committing heinous crimes in the areas they have taken, including the mass execution of civilians as well as Iraqi army troops and officers.
