Shells hit Saudi border areas near Iraq: Report

A Saudi official says a number of shells have hit the kingdom’s northeastern Arar area along the border with Iraq, which has been the scene of escalating Takfiri violence over the past weeks.

“Three shells struck near a residential complex in the northern border area, without causing casualties,” AFP quoted an unnamed Saudi border official as saying on Monday.

The Saudi official also stated that an investigation is underway to find the origins of the shelling.

Iraq is currently witnessing a spate of violence, which escalated after militants from the ISIL terrorist group took control of large swathes of the country, including a number of key cities in early June.

Last month, Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki lashed out at Saudi Arabia for supporting the ISIL terrorists, who according to him are perpetrating genocide against the Iraqi nation.

“Riyadh’s support for the ISIL makes the Al Saud regime responsible for the ‘crimes that may qualify as genocide: the spilling of Iraqi blood, the destruction of Iraqi state institutions and historical and religious sites,’” Maliki said in a statement.

The ISIL militancy is not limited to Iraq as the al-Qaeda-inspired group is also operating in neighboring Syria at the same time.
