Iran says it is ready to send military equipment to Iraq as the request of the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a foreign ministry official has said.

Iranian deputy foreign minister, Hosein Amir Abdullahian told Al-Alam on Thursday that, in the case Tehran is asked by Baghdad, it is ready to deliver military aid to Iraq within international regulations.

Iraq has been battling against a massive extremist assault at its northern cities launched by the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Levant.

There has been no such request at the side of the Iraqi government, the Iranian diplomat said, adding that, “we will stay aside Iraq in fighting against terrorism”.

A report by The New York Times had earlier claimed that Iran sent military equipment and drones to Iraq.

Iran has voiced support to the Iraqi army and government against the threat of ISIL, but has denied having any military involvement in the crisis.
