It happened at the 12th corrida, or fight, less than half way through the month-long Fiesta of San Isidro. It is the official season's biggest event, known for bloody scenes.

In every bout each matador brutally, and traditionally, kills two animals, but this is the first time in 35 years that no one was left standing to tackle them.

First to fall was David Mora, who was brought down by his first bull of the afternoon and gored in three places as he was tossed around. He was rushed for immediate emergency surgery.

Antonio Nazare stepped into the ring in his place and followed tradition by killing the animal using cape and sword. But he did it as swiftly as possible and without the expected spectacle or flamboyant movements.

However, within minutes of his own first bull entering the ring, he too ended up at the hospital with a single wound.

Sole remaining matador Jimenez Fortes stepped in and killed the animal, again swiftly and without flamboyance.

But then Fortes’ own first bull sent him flying through the air, catching him with its horns three times. He quickly joined the other two at the infirmary.

Four bulls were left, but with no one to fight them, the battle was cancelled. Final score Bulls 3-0 Matadors.
