Speaker of Syrian People's Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Laham has urged all Syrian people from any political and social stripes to participate in the country’s upcoming presidential elections scheduled for June 3.

"Syria is in need of every honest vote for the ballot boxes as well as for every Syrian on the field, at factories, schools, universities and in all domains of life," al-Laham emphasized during a parliamentary session on Sunday.

He further added that those that refrain from practicing their constitutional right and duty to vote "would be actually abandoning their national mission and relinquishing their duties at a time when the homeland and martyrs' families are calling for them."

The Speaker also urged Syrian media outlets to extend equal opportunities to all three presidential candidates approved by the Supreme Constitutional Court to make their case to Syrian people and adequately explain their platforms and programs.

Earlier, 13 parliaments of friendly nations were invited by the People's Assembly to dispatch a team of legislators and election experts to Syria and observe the election process in the Arab country.

Al-Laham further underlined that it is the Syrians who will have the final say on Election Day to pick whomever they "trust to be a leader and protector of Syria and defender of the people's rights."

The top Syrian legislator also marked the 66th anniversary of Palestinian al-Nakba Day, commemorating the brutal displacement of Palestinians that preceded and followed the Israeli occupation of Palestine in 1948, emphasizing that Syria will always remain the defender of the Palestinian people in Palestine or Syria, where they are going through hard times due to the acts of foreign-sponsored terrorist groups.
