Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi has called on young militants to lay down their weapons and defect to defend the homeland from foreign terrorists and mercenaries.

During his Saturday meeting with popular figures from southwestern Daraa province, al-Halqi reaffirmed that Daraa will remain Syria’s invincible shield, stressing the importance of backing the army forces in confronting terrorism throughout Syria.

"Popular figures and dignitaries in the province [Daraa] have a national, ethical and humanitarian duty to enhance communications among people of the homeland, realize national reconciliation, soar above wounds and keep fellow citizens from sliding into acts of violence and terrorism.''

Al-Halqi underlined the role of clergymen in fighting Takfiri and Wahabi thoughts that terrorist groups are trying to spread.

He affirmed that Syria is "well on the way to victory over terrorism and the fierce war waged against it,'' indicating to the accelerating pace of reconciliations in several areas, particularly in Damascus countryside, and the government's efforts to enhance the capabilities of the Syrian people.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey - support the militants operating inside the country.

More than 130,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the turmoil that has gripped Syria for over two years.

The UN also says more than four million other Syrians will be forced out of their homes in 2014 by the escalating conflict in the country.
