Russia: US claims on Syria chemicals ‘usual unnecessary pressure’

Russia has denounced US claims on Syria dragging its feet on giving up chemical weapons saying that they are actually “in good faith” to eliminate the weapons according to their deal.

The Syrian government is acting "in good faith" to eliminate its chemical weapons under a deal brokered by Russia and the United States, the Interfax news agency quoted Russian Foreign Ministry official Mikhail Ulyanov as saying.

The United States blamed Syrian government for delays in shipping the weapons saying that there was no legitimate reason for any delay.

Ulyanov, head of the Foreign Ministry's security and disarmament department, said possible delays were because security problems on the road to the port of Latakia and insufficient technical support from the outside world, Interfax reported.

"We see that the Syrians are approaching the fulfillment of their obligations seriously and in good faith," Ulyanov was quoted as saying. "We see no need to urge them on or force them into an overly strict framework."

"Our American partners, in their usual manner, are betting on pressure even in those cases where there is absolutely no need for it," he said.

The Syrian government agreed to destroy the chemical weapons after the US and some of its allies claimed Syrian army used sarin gas in an attack on the outskirts of Damascus that killed hundreds of people in August 2013. Syrian has rejected the allegations saying the foreign-backed militants fighting in Syria were responsible for the attack.

Syria has already submitted several reports to the United Nations showing militants used sarin against civilians in different parts of the country.
