A pregnant woman has been severely beaten by her husband and his relatives in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli over losing a water bill, security sources say.

Fatima al-Nashar, was beaten by her husband Bilal Sultan, his brother Othman and her mother-in-law Naimeh Kasha for allegedly losing a water bill, the sources told The Daily Star.

Nashar was admitted to a local hospital in Tripoli. She is in a critical condition and faces the risk of losing her child.

In July 2013, a 33-year-old Lebanese woman named Roula Yaacoub was beaten to death by her husband.

Neighbors said that they heard Roula - the mother of five daughters - screaming and they tried interfering to stop a fight that was transpiring between the couple, but the husband refused.

Later on, the man rushed out to ask for help when his wife went unconscious. Roula was rushed to the hospital. She died shortly after that.
