An Egyptian court has acquitted a top aide of former Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi of charges of attempted murder.

The Cairo Criminal Court issued the verdict Monday in the case against Ahmed Qaddaf al-Dam. The charges stem from an exchange of gunfire with Egyptian security forces outside al-Dam's Cairo home in March 2012.

Egyptian authorities were acting on an Interpol alert issued at Libya's request for al-Dam's arrest.

Al-Dam is wanted in Libya for alleged corruption and his role in the 2011 Libyan civil war that ended with Gadhafi's capture and killing. It's not clear whether Egypt will extradite him.

After the war, Libya asked Egypt to hand over 40 Libyans with ties to the Gadhafi regime who are suspected of committing crimes during the war.
