Iraqi border protection authorities in the al-Anbar province have announced the discovery of three underground tunnels that were being used by foreign-backed armed insurgents.

The armed Syrian men were reportedly using the tunnels to smuggle people, weapons, ammunition and fuel into Syria, according to an Alalam report on Saturday.

According to the report, the Syria-based Cham Press has cited a source in al-Anbar’s border protection Center as saying that the length of one of the tunnels exceeded 300 meters, extending from the al-Qaem region of al-Anbar to the al-Kamal section of the Syrian territory.

The Iraqi source added that the illegal smuggle of the contraband went both ways.

He further stated that the desert structure of the region has greatly contributed to the ability of the terrorists to dig and build the tunnels.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to media reports, the Western powers and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supplying and supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
