The world’s second longest urban tunnel and a colossal elevated expressway have entered service in the north of the Iranian capital, Tehran.

The Niayesh Tunnel and Shahid Sadr Elevated Expressway were inaugurated in a Saturday ceremony attended by Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and several other officials, Press TV reported.

The two mega projects carried out by IRGC’s Khatam al-Anbiya Construction Base in 800 days are meant to ease traffic congestion on seven main thoroughfares across the metropolis.

The world’s second longest urban tunnel and fifteenth longest road tunnel, Niayesh (10,252 meters long, ramps included) connects northwestern Tehran to Shahid Sadr Elevated Expressway in the north which runs all the way to northeast Tehran.

The single-column quake-proof elevated expressway is 11 kilometers long, ramps and loops included. The project puts Iran among the five world countries which possess the technology to build elevated expressways.

The traffic flow on the ground was not blocked during the two-year period when the Shahid Sadr Elevated Expressway was being constructed.
