Qashqavi said on Saturday that 25 inmates held in UAE prisons were granted clemency on the occasion of Eid al-Adha (the Feast of Sacrifice), Press TV reported.
The Iranian official said the release of Iranian nationals was secured through the efforts of the Islamic Republic’s Foreign Ministry, the Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate in Dubai and the cooperation of UAE officials.
On October 23, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the UAE signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on mutual cooperation.
Qashqavi said then that the MoU concerns cooperation between the two countries’ Coast Guards and fighting drug trafficking.
The agreement was signed in a meeting between Qashqavi and Emirati Assistant Foreign Minister Tareq al-Haidan during the eighth joint Iran-UAE Joint Consular Committee in Tehran.
Qashqavi added that the 16-article MoU also includes judicial cooperation on criminal matters such as the swap of prisoners.
