Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says Tehran seeks a realistic solution to the Syrian crisis that poses serious dangers to the region.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is trying to find a realistic solution for this major problem in the region that has posed great dangers to the region,” Press TV quoted Zarif as saying at a joint press conference with UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi in Tehran on Saturday.

“The duty of the regional countries and the Islamic Republic is to help Syrian’s find a solution [to the crisis],” Zarif added.

Brahimi arrived in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Saturday to discuss the ongoing crisis in Syria with Iranian officials.

The UN-Arab League envoy is currently on a Middle East tour to gather support for the Geneva meeting, which is scheduled to be held in November.

Zarif expressed hope that Brahimi could play an influential role in ending the ongoing crisis in Syria and finding an acceptable solution that stabilizes the region and prevents violence and extremism.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports his [Brahimi’s] efforts to reach a permanent and mutual solution,” the Iranian foreign minister said.

Brahimi, for his part, said the Islamic Republic’s participation in the forthcoming Geneva conference was “natural, necessary and beneficial.”

The Geneva II conference is seen as a chance to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria. The event has been delayed for months.

The conference was proposed by Russia and the US on May 7. The date of the long-delayed event has changed many times as Syria’s foreign-backed opposition coalition remains divided over whether or not to participate in the meeting.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the violence.
