At least five people have been killed and dozens more wounded after terrorists in Syria launched a mortar attack on the holy shrine of Sayyidah Zaynab in a Damascus suburb.

Reports say nearly 20 people were injured in the mortar attack on Thursday.

The holy site came under a terrorist attack on July 19. Takfiris fired several mortar shells at the shrine, killing a custodian.

Hazrat Zaynab was the daughter of the first Imam of Shia Muslims, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) and the granddaughter of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him).

The attack comes as the Syrian people are celebrating Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

On Thursday morning, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as well as high-profile Syrian officials performed Eid al-Fitr prayers at the Anas Bin Malek Mosque in the capital, alongside the Syrian Grand Mufti Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun.

Syria has been in turmoil over the past two years since terrorists backed by western powers and regional allies including Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia inflamed tensions in Syria by assisting arms and money to the rebels.

According to the United Nations report, more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million were displaced due to the foreign-backed militancy since the war broke out in Syria two years ago.
