Just two days into the Iranian president-elect Hassan Rouhani sworn-in, the American lawmakers on Wednesday approved a bill that would freeze Iran’s oil export.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said that United Nations Security Council sanctions already in place against Tehran were sufficient. He suggested the US bill, which still has more steps to clear before becoming law, was counterproductive.
"Any additional sanctions are actually aimed at the economic strangulation of Iran, but not at solving the problem of non-proliferation," Gatilov said.
"What has been done through the Security Council is quite adequate and sufficient," he added.
Iran’s foreign ministry has blasted the new US House of Representatives’ sanctions, calling the move as “a failed policy.”
Sanctions have failed to solve the dispute and will not change the principle stance of the Islamic Republic in the future, said Iran’s foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Araqchi.
Araqchi said the embargo will twist the ongoing problems and provides no solution to end the dispute.
