A former Egyptian lawmaker has revealed ex-president Mohamed Morsi called on African Union to cancel Egypts membership under the interim government.
delegation from African Union met with Morsi in Cairo in order to be informed of his health situation under three weeks of arrest, Mustafa Bakri leaked on Wednesday.
Members of the African Union High Panel for Egypt, headed by former Mali president Alpha Oumar Konare, met Morsi for one hour late Tuesday.
Morsi urged the African delegation to halt Egypt’s membership in a bid to put pressure on the interim government to release him and allow the deposed president to return to power, Bakri said.
The former legislator also noted that Morsi demanded the African Union to urge the West to push for his reinstating to power and punishing the army.
The visit comes on the heels of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton's talks with Morsi late Monday, which marked the deposed leader's first contact with the outside world since he was detained during Egypt's July 3 military coup. He has been held incommunicado at an undisclosed location since then.
Last week, prosecutors said Morsi is facing accusations of conspiring with a Palestinian group to escape from prison during the 2011 uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.
On July 3, the head of Egypt’s army chief Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi announced that president Mohamed Morsi was no longer in power. Al-Sisi also dissolved the Egyptian constitution.
The Chief Justice of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court, Adli Mansour, was sworn in as interim president on July 4.
Since then, Egypt has been the scene of rival rallies and clashes between thousands of the supporters and opponents of Morsi.
