The Israeli-occupied Golan Heights has been targeted by mortar shell fired from Syria.

United Nations peacekeepers in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights reported on Sunday that a mortar shell from Syria had fallen into an open expanse in the area’s north, causing no damage, an Israeli army official told Russian RIA Novosti.

The shell, one of many to have landed in the Golan Heights in recent months, was not believed to have been aimed at Israeli forces.

Tensions have been high in the Golan Heights due to Israel’s provocative moves in the area, along Syrian borders

A day earlier, The New York Times cited US officials as saying that Israel had this month conducted an airstrike on Syria’s main port city, Latakia, intending to destroy Russian-made Yakhont cruise missiles that had been sold to the Syrian government.

The regime in Tel Aviv has recently increased its military activities in the occupied Syrian territory of Golan Heights.
On June 26, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that military maneuvers may be carried out in the occupied Golan Heights in the near future, the Times of Israel reported.

Israel’s latest assault was regime’s forth attack on Syria which has been struggling with a massive foreign-backed insurgency for more than two years.

Israeli has been one of the strongest supporters of the bloody insurgency in Syria that has already left more than 90,000 people dead.

The conflict in Syria started in March 2011, when pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of Western and regional states.

The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.

As the foreign-backed insurgency in Syria continues without an end in sight, the US government has boosted its political and military support to Takfiri extremists.

Washington has remained indifferent about warnings by Russia and other world powers about the consequences of arming militant groups.
