90% of Americans disapprove of Congress: Poll

A new poll shows that only 10 percent of Americans have confidence in Congress as an institution.

The figure, three percent lower compared to a similar poll last year, ranks the legislative body last on a list of 16 societal institutions for the fourth straight year.

Confidence in Congress was 42 percent in 1973. However, over the last 10 years, public opinion of the institution and its leaders has gone down markedly.

The poll conducted by Gallup surveyed 1,529 adults by telephone across the country. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

Americans’ confidence in labor and health maintenance organizations was higher than Congress, the poll showed.

"Democrats, independents, and Republicans are about equally likely to express low confidence in Congress. This is a change from the past and likely reflects the split control of Congress," said the Gallup poll.

The Republicans control the House of Representatives, while the Democrats control the Senate.

Although the poll must make the representatives do more to please American citizens, the lawmakers on Monday allowed student loan rates to double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 simply because they could not reach an agreement.
