Al-Alam correspondent said on Saturday that as part of the “North Storm” operation conducted by the army to eliminate terrorists’ threat at the vast province of Aleppo, Syrian Special Forces clashed with militants around Mennigh airport.
The airport which is located between the city of Aleppo and the northern towns which are under a strict siege imposed by thousands of militants is considered as an important base for the armed groups.
Syrian army forces managed to enter the airport following fierce clashes with heavily-armed militants who received fresh artillery from their foreign supporters on Friday.
Clashes were also reported in smaller towns located along the border with Lebanon.
The border areas are highly volatile due to massive presence of militants who have the residential areas under their siege and sometimes take people in a whole town as hostages.
These border towns are strategically important for the militants since they contain some of their most important supply routes for receiving arms and arriving new armed militants.
Clashes are not limited to Aleppo, and Syrian soldiers have engaged in clashes with terrorist groups almost throughout the country.
Fighting continued in the capital Damascus as well as different areas in Rif Damascus where militants have been trying to infiltrate to get closer to the capital.
In Deir ez-Zour, two commanders of terrorist groups were killed in clashes with army soldiers.
The Syrian army has made considerable achievements in its fight against terrorists in the past couple of months.
Syrian Army gains have worried supporters of the bloody insurgency, mainly the United States which analysts say cannot afford to witness a defeat for anti-Syria militants following its strong support which has extended the war to more than two years.
Syria crisis started as pro-reform protests but with interventions from the United States and its regional allies it soon turned to a massive insurgency which took in numerous terrorist groups from all over Europe and Middle East to wage one of the bloodiest wars the region has ever experienced.
The war, which many fear is turning to a “war of hatred”, has already taken more than 90,000 lives.
