The lastest opinion poll by the US-based Gallup institute shows the majority of Americans disapprove of the White House decision to send weapons to insurgents in Syria.

The poll results published on Monday indicate that 54% of adult US nationals disapprove of President Barack Obama administration's decision to send lethal aid to militants fighting against the Syrian government.
Only 37% of Americans approve of Washington’s move and the rest were unaware of the situation.

These findings are from a June 15-16 Gallup poll conducted just after the Obama administration announced that it ordered the US spy agency, CIA, to provide direct military aid to the militants.

This comes after a late May survey by the same pollster revealed that 68 percent of Americans were also against the United States military involvement in Syria.

Also on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow and Washington have decided to encourage all parties involved in the Syrian conflict to hold peace talks in Geneva.

Putin made the remarks after bilateral talks with the US president at the G8 summit in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

The Syrian crisis began in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government forces, have been killed.

Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

The Syrian government says the West and its regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are propping the militants.
