“Ten days ago, we received a verbal invitation to take part in this conference,” Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told reporters in Moscow on Tuesday.

“The conference will be successful if all the influential countries take part,” he said.

UN-Arab League Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said on June 7 that the international conference to resolve the crisis in Syria might be held in July. The peace talks had originally been planned to be held in June.

Amir-Abdollahian added that the participation of Iran and other influential countries is key to settling the crisis in Syria.

Amir-Abdollahian had earlier said that Iran would make a final decision on taking part in the conference after receiving a written invitation.

The Iranian official said during the Tuesday press conference that Western countries led by the US are responsible for the ongoing violence against the Syrian people and the spread of insecurity to the neighboring countries.

Amir-Abdollahian added that the US and European countries continue to send weapons to Syria “despite the active presence of terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda and al-Nusra Front” in the country.

Elaborating on Tehran’s stance on the crisis, the deputy foreign minister said, “Iran simultaneously supports the Syrian people, political opposition and reforms by the government of [Syrian president] Bashar al-Assad.”

The crisis in Syria began in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants fighting in Syria are foreign nationals.
