Iran’s Ambassador to the UN Office there Mohsen Naziri-Asl, told a meeting of UN Human Rights Council in Geneva that Iran supports those parts of a recent report by the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry (CoI) on Syria that stress the need for a political solution to the crisis in the Arab country.

Independent United Nations human rights investigators presented a new report on Tuesday, parts of which call for a “diplomatic surge” to end the violence in Syria.

The Iranian envoy rejected any military intervention in Syria and said legitimate rights of Syrian people must be respected.

Naziri-Asl pointed to the recent International Conference on Syria in the Iranian capital, Tehran, which was held under the banner of “Political Solution, Regional Stability”, saying it was no less important than the upcoming Geneva conference on Syria.

On May 29, Iran hosted the event attended by representatives from 40 countries, seeking to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

Russia and the United States agreed in Moscow on May 7 to convene an international conference on Syria, which will serve as a follow-up to an earlier Geneva meeting held in June 2012.

Iran has repeatedly expressed opposition to any foreign intervention in Syria's internal affairs, stressing that dialog, national reconciliation and free elections are the key to resolving the unrest in the Arab country.
