US senator on illegal visit to Syria to meet rebels

Leading US Senator John McCain has illegally travelled to Syria on a surprise visit to meet with insurgents.

The US State Department has confirmed the visit which took place on Monday as EU foreign ministers huddled together in Brussels to ease arming militants.
Two years of violence in Syria have killed more than 90,000 people. The US and its allies in the West and the Middle East extensively support insurgents in their bid to oust the Syrian government.

McCain’s illegal travel to Syria, where a functional government is in place, sets an unusual precedent in violating the territorial integrity of a sovereign nation.
According to Associated Press, McCain slipped into Syria from Turkey which is one of the key players behind the ongoing conflict.
McCain met with militant leaders, who asked him for increased US support, including heavy weapons.

They asked the American senator for a no-fly zone, and airstrikes on Syrian government and Hezbollah forces, according to The Daily Beast, which first reported McCain’s visit.

Last week, a US Senate committee voted to provide weapons to rebels in Syria, as well as military training to rebel groups and sanctions against anyone who sells oil or transfers arms to Syria. McCain is a member of that committee.

He is a key ally of Israel which eagerly likes to see the back of the Syrian government and favors providing arms to rebel forces in Syria.

The visit took place at the same time as meetings in Paris involving efforts to bring the Syrian government and opposition to an international peace conference in Geneva.

The talks are being spearheaded by the US and Russia but the initiative looks increasingly threatened by the latest aggressive measures taken by the West.

McCain’s illegal visit to Syria dealt a double whammy to any hopes of a peaceful solution after European foreign ministers approved easing shipment of  arms to rebels in Syria.
