Speaking at a ceremony held for honoring The World Forum for Proximity of Schools and Thoughts in Syrian embassy in Lebanon, Hassoun said, “Syrian people who have offered their bloods for protecting Palestine and unity in the Arab and Islamic World should not be left alone now against murder and destruction”.
“We call on the (Syrian) opposition side to come and sit for dialogue and save Syria which once was a land where prophets were raised from,” he said.
Hassoun said, “We have come to Lebanon with the slogan of indulgence, compromise and trying for unity and denouncing anarchism”.
The prominent cleric said the World Forum for Proximity of Schools and Thoughts "is not just for religion and thoughts but it is also meant for establishing peace in the Islam World and the international community".
Syria has been struggling with a western-backed insurgency which began in March 2011 as a protesting movement soon turned to be a cover for terrorist groups including al-Qaeda and al-Nusra Front.
The United States, Israel, UK and their allies as well as several Arab countries, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia have been supporting the armed insurgency in Syria, mulling ways to supply the militants with more arms to topple the legitimate government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
