A senior Zionist army authority says Israel has made a mistake in assessing the power of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad government.

Israeli perception of Bashar Assad’s power in Syria was wrong, Zionist daily Haaretz quoted the anonymous authority as saying.

Israeli authorities remain divided over what might happen next in Syria, said the military authority, adding that Israel made a mistake when it underestimated the strength of Bashar Assad government and the Syrian System.

Israelis no longer buy the approach that toppling Bashar Assad’s government and formation of a government by the opposition in Syria will serve Israel’s interests, the daily wrote, noting that al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front has deeply infiltrated in the Syrian opposition.

Some believe Israel should consider and make itself ready for a new Bashar Assad on top of the Syrian government, the newspaper reported.
