Iran has issued a commemorative stamp on the occasion of the National Day of the Persian Gulf to mark and reiterate the Persian identity of the strategic waterway.

The ceremony was attended by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday.

Meantime, the maritime Atlas of the Persian Gulf was also unveiled on Tuesday in a ceremony attended by Iranian minister of communications and information technology.

Iran designated April 30 as the National Persian Gulf Day to highlight the fact that the waterway has been referred to by historians and ancient texts as 'Persian' since the Achaemenid Empire was established in what is now modern day Iran.

The day marks the anniversary of the expulsion of Portuguese military forces from the Strait of Hormuz in 1622.

Several cultural, artistic, literal and scientific programs are scheduled to be held in Iran and other countries as part of an international festival to introduce Persian Gulf's identity.
