The ATV Channel aired an interview with an anonymous former officer in the French army, in which the issue of Belgian youth who left the country to fight against the government in Syria was brought up. The anonymous officer told the Channel that most of the Belgian fighters in Syria had never carried guns before and that they were “re-used as artillery-fuel” for the terrorists.
According to his assertions young Belgians went to Turkey where they would give up their identity cards, cell phones and money and got prepared to leave for Syria. These terrorists are smuggled to Syria with no identification so that they are not able to go back on their own, as the anonymous officer asserted.
The report comes as Belgian security sources had said before that a considerable number of Belgian nationals were fighting alongside the armed terrorist groups in Syria.
Syria is facing a heavy armed insurgency which according to reports involves foreign terrorists and militia groups. A comprehensive study by a London-based institution recently revealed that hundreds of Europeans have infiltrated the Syrian territory since the start of the unrest in March 2011.
Meanwhile, Belgium’s La Libre Belgique daily quoted some sources as saying that the Belgian fighters in Syria are not working within the militias of the so-called 'Free Army', but that they are fighting alongside other extremist Salafi groups and terrorists of al-Nusra front.
The daily reported that the security officials in Belgium were worried the fighters might return home after gaining combat experience, and that they might spread extremist views or engage in terrorist acts inside Belgium or in other European countries.
