Acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas has slammed Israel for fueling violence in the Palestinian territories, saying that the regime is trying to “ignite chaos” in Palestine.

"The Israeli government is behind this escalation," Abbas said in a Thursday statement, referring to the escalation of tensions in the occupied West Bank following the death of Palestinian inmate Abu Hamdiah in an Israeli jail on Tuesday.

Abbas said that "Israel has full responsibility for the escalation in the Palestinian territories and is trying to ignite chaos”.

Abbas’s remarks came as Israeli forces killed two young Palestinians late Wednesday in clashes at a military roadblock at Tulkarem in the north of the Palestinian territory.

"Israel is trying to muddy the waters and sow chaos because there's no way peaceful demonstrations should lead to two deaths," he added.

Following the report of Hamdiah’s death, Abbas said he held the Israeli regime responsible for the death of the 64-year-old inmate, stating that Tel Aviv had refused requests by the Palestinian Authority to free the ill prisoner.
