Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas has expressed his appreciation to Iran for supporting his country’s recognition as a non-member observer state in the United Nations, Al-Alam reports.

He made the remarks to al-Alam news network after his meeting with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the sidelines of the 12th summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in the Egyptian capital, Cairo on Wednesday.

The United Nations General Assembly voted to recognize Palestine as a non-member observer state, instead of a “non-member observer entity” in the face of opposition from the Israeli regime and the United States, in November 2012.

Iran provided its support throughout the process and was one of the speakers of the session who favored the vote, on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Abbas went on to say that he and Ahmadinejad discussed issues regarding the reconciliation talks between Palestinian rival groups.
