Algerian political parties have called for a halt to French overflights in the North African state and urged Paris to end its war on Mali.

In a Wednesday statement, the parties urged "the closure of Algerian airspace to French and non-French military planes."

Paris announced on January 13, that Algeria had allowed French warplanes to use its airspace for conducting bombing strikes on the north of the West African country of Mali.

"Overflights of Algeria by French planes were authorized on the basis of false arguments which damage national sovereignty and place Algeria as a partner in this war," the statement by the Algerian parties said.

The parties also called for France to halt its war in the region and "withdraw immediately from Mali."

On January 11, France launched a war in Mali under the pretext of halting the advance of the fighters in the African country.

The UN refugee agency has warned that the war in Mali could leave at least 700,000 people homeless.
