The Syrian army and its allies seized full control of Abu Kamal, Isis last significant town in Syria, a report said.

(tasnim) -- “The Syrian Army and its allies in the axis of resistance have expelled Isis from its last stronghold on Syrian soil,” a statement by the joint commander center of Syria's allies said, according to Tasnim dispatches.

The so-called British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also confirmed this on Sunday, saying that most Isis militants had withdrawn from the town, with fighting continuing in the perimeter of Abu Kamal.

The army had declared victory over Isis in Abu Kamal earlier this month but the terrorists then staged a counter-attack using sleeper cells hidden in the town.

Driving Isis from Abu Kamal means only a few villages along the Euphrates and patches of nearby desert, as well as isolated pockets in other parts of the country, remain in Syria of the self-proclaimed caliphate it declared in 2014.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
