The Syrian Army formed a Fifth Army Corps from volunteers with the aim of putting an end to terrorism across the country.
“In response to the rapidly changing conditions, consolidate the existing combat achievements and meet the need to end terrorism in Syria, command of the Syrian army now announces to establish the Fifth Army Corps. The corps consists of volunteers and will carry out anti-terrorism missions. It will work with other troops of the Syrian army with support from our allies, aiming to bring stability in Syria” said Ali Mayhoub, spokesman of the Syrian Army.
The military statement noted that any Syrian citizen can join the new formation in any province, adding to which it stated that volunteers must be physically fit and have already finished the compulsory military service.
The Syrian Army has been engaged in battles against an array of terrorist groups, including Fatah Al Sham (former Nusra Front) Syrian Al Qaeda groups and the Islamic State (ISIS, ISIL, IS and Daesh) group for over five years.
