Persistent seasonal rains falling in southern China since Saturday have displaced thousands of people yielding dramatic footage of vehicles engulfed by swollen rivers and causing material losses of 51 million yuan (7.8 million US dollars), according to Chinese state media.

A man could be seen clinging to the top of a car, as a strong current dragged the vehicle, in footage captured by state broadcaster CCTV in Guangxi province's Liuzhou city and aired on Tuesday.

One person was reported missing, the state news agency Xinhua quoted the regional civil affairs department.

The rains have affected other areas in the country, including southern Guangdong province, and displaced more than 8,000 people in Guizhou province, according to Xinhua.
