According to a new poll if Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump is elected president in November, over a quarter of Americans would consider moving to another country.

The Morning Consult/Vox poll released Tuesday found that 28 percent of registered voters questioned said they would likely consider leaving the US if Trump were president, while 65 percent said they would stay.

More than half of those who indicated openness to leaving the country if Trump wins reported that they are "very likely" to consider moving to another country.

The survey highlighted an ideological split among respondents: nearly half of Democrats, 49 percent, said they'd consider leaving if Trump were president, while 12 percent of Republicans said they'd consider moving away.

Google searches for "How can I move to Canada" spiked early this month as Trump won a series of primaries in his campaign for the Republican nomination.

Trump, who has never held elected office, is leading the race despite the fact that his campaign has been marked by controversial statements, including disparaging remarks about women, Mexican immigrants and Muslims.

Over the past several days, Trump’s rallies have descended into violence between supporters and protesters, and have become heavily secured events teeming with dozens and in some cases hundreds of police.

On Friday, thousands of demonstrators clashed with Trump’s supporters in Chicago, Illinois, resulting in Trump cancelling the event.

According to a recent Gallup poll, 63 percent of Americans have an unfavorable opinion of Trump and 53 percent have negative feelings about Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

Should they clinch the nomination, it would represent the first time in at least a quarter-century that majorities of Americans held negative views of both the Democratic and Republican presidential nominee at the same time.

“There is no analogous election in the modern era where the two top candidates for the nomination are as divisive and weak,” said Steve Schmidt, a top campaign adviser to George W. Bush in 2004 and John McCain in 2008. “There is no precedent for it;” Press TV reported.
