In a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Baghdad on Monday evening, Abadi said Iran’s success to finalize the text of a nuclear agreement with the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) has delighted the whole region.
The conclusion of talks over Iran’s nuclear program proved that all allegations against the Islamic Republic were “baseless”, the Iraqi premier noted.
Abadi also criticized certain regional countries for adopting “unconstructive” stances toward Iran.
Zarif, for his part, underlined that settlement of Iran’s nuclear issue would definitely serve the interests of Iraq and all other regional states, saying, “We tell the regional friends that there is no reason for concern.”
The two officials also discussed expansion of Tehran-Baghdad relations and regional cooperation.
Zarif travelled to Iraq as the final leg of his tour of regional countries that took him earlier to Kuwait and Qatar.
His trip came after Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3) finalized the text of a lasting agreement on Tehran's nuclear energy program in Vienna, Austria, on July 14. Later, the 15-memebr United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution endorsing the text of the deal.
