Ibrahim al-Rubaish joined al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula after being transferred in 2006 from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to his native Saudi Arabia for a rehabilitation program.
He was considered the group's main ideologue and theological adviser, and his writings and sermons were prominent in its publications.
U.S. officials – who in October offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture and in December named him a global terrorist – have not publicly confirmed his death.
