“The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that supporting the Iraqi and Syrian governments, which are really fighting terrorism, is the best way to fight the ISIL and terrorism in the region,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for African and Middle Eastern Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said during a meeting with the visiting head of the French National Assembly's Defense Committee, Patricia Adam in Tehran on Sunday.
Amir Abdollahian also voiced his doubt over the honesty of a US-led coalition against the ISIL group, which was formed during a NATO meeting in Wales.
"For fighting terrorism, the Islamic Republic of Iran will not wait for any international coalition and it will act based on its international responsibility and within the framework of international regulations," he said.
The Iranian diplomat added that the “wrong and selective approach (adopted by) the West and the US” towards terrorist groups such as the ISIL has made terrorists stronger so that they threaten stability and security in the Middle East region.
The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is a militant group in Iraq and Syria believed to be supported by the West and some regional Arab countries. The terrorist group claims as an independent state the territory of Iraq and Syria, with implied future claims intended over more of the Levant, including Lebanon, occupied Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey.
The French parliamentarian, for her part, pointed to Iran’s significant role in regional peace and security and emphasized the importance of consultation with Tehran on the current developments in the region.
