At least four protesters have been killed in clashes in Cairo as Egypt marks the anniversary of its 2011 revolution, said security sources without elaborating.

The clashes erupted on Saturday as anti-government protestors marched toward Cairo's Tahrir Square to protest against the military-backed interim government on the anniversary of the nation's popular revolt that toppled US-backed dictator Hosni Mubarak.

Egyptian police fired live rounds, along with tear gas and birdshot, to disperse anti-government protesters in Cairo.

The protesters were chanting slogans against the army and the police as they gathered at the Mostafa Mahmoud mosque in the district of Mohandiseen before they were chased away by police.

The square next to the mosque was blocked off by police, who arrested seven demonstrators, security sources said.

Some protestors held up posters of Egypt's first and only democratically-elected President Mohamed Morsi, who was toppled by the country's army chief in July.

Egypt has been hit by a wave of protests since the military overthrew Morsi, suspended the nation's post-revolution constitution, and dissolved the parliament in July 2013.
