Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has visited a mosque in the capital, Damascus to perform the Eid al-Adha prayers.

President al-Assad has visited people at mosques and in public venues on several occasions despite the foreign-hatched conflict in his country.

Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, is observed on October 15 and 16, in the Muslim World. One of main feast festivals celebrated by Muslims, Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of the Islamic calendar’s last month, Dhu al-Hijjah.

Eid al-Adha falls within the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, known as the Hajj.

Muslims celebrate the holiday to commemorate their belief in Prophet Abraham's willingness to follow God's command to sacrifice his son Ismael, and Ismael's consent to being sacrificed. The day is marked by feeding the poor and going to mosques for praying.
