A tunnel filled with explosives set as a trap by militants in Syria’s strategic city of Homs was found by the Syrian army, before the insurgents could detonate the bombs.

According to Al Alam reporter on Wednesday, the army which is closer than ever to take Homs under full control, found a one-kilometer long tunnel in Kfar Aya district, located in southwestern side of Homs, which was filled with bombs, ready to be exploded.

Our reporter said militants tried to detonate the whole tunnel as the army got closer to the area, but their plan was foiled because they had to run away before they could blow it up.

The whole city, which was the epicenter of the bloody insurgency in Syria, is surrounded by the Syrian army and all supply routes to the insurgents have been closed for weeks.

There were reports of internal clashes between the insurgents groups on Wednesday which led to setting off explosives in a bomb-production local factory in Hananou district.

At least 12 militants were found dead in teh building while 27 were also injured.

Syrian army has been advancing apace in Homs, looking to break a lengthy stalemate in the city, which has been the scene of fierce fighting over the past year.

The two sides have been trading artillery fire in Homs for months, but the army started an all-out operation on May 30th to purge the city from foreign-backed militants.

Crisis in Syria started in March 2011, when pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of Western and regional states.

The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.

As the foreign-backed insurgency in Syria continues without an end in sight, the US government boosts its political and military support to Takfiri extremists.

Washington has remained indifferent about warnings by Russia and other world powers about the consequences of arming militant groups.
