Addressing Friday prayers in the Gaza Strip, Haniyeh said, "We ask Egyptian authorities to revise mainly the security articles of the Camp David Treaty even though not cancelling it.”

“Zionists (Israelis) try to use the gap created by the treaty, which blocks the military presence in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula in order to de-stabilize Egypt's security and damage Egypt- Palestine relations," he said.

The Sinai Peninsula is awash with guns and has become increasingly lawless since the fall of former dictator Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

The Camp David Accords were signed by then Egyptian President Anwar El Sadat and then-Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin on September 17, 1978, following 13 days of secret negotiations at Camp David in Washington D.C.

The deal comprises two agreements, a Framework for Peace in the Middle East, and a Framework for the Conclusion of a Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel. The latter agreement led to the signing of the Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty in 1979 which also took place in the United States.
