Iran Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani says the recent report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the Islamic Republic's nuclear energy program aims to create media hype ahead of talks between Tehran and the P5+1 group.
Larijani said on Sunday that cliché statements in IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano’s report aimed to create media hype.
“The IAEA is a professional institution in the nuclear issue and should not act in a way to undermine itself,” Majlis Speaker said.
“Since all Iran’s nuclear activities are conducted under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the inspectors of this international institution, we expected the director general’s report to be fair,” Larijani added.
Stressing that Tehran has always welcomed constructive negotiations with the IAEA, he said, “In recent months Iran’s cooperation [with the IAEA] has exceeded its obligations which shows we have nothing to hide in [our] nuclear affairs.”
The Iranian official stressed that the IAEA report would not influence the upcoming talks between Iran and the P5+1 -- including the United States, Britain, China, France and Russia, plus Germany -- if it had been issued with such intent.
Iran and the P5+1 have agreed to hold the next round of talks in Kazakhstan on February 26.
The last round of the negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 was held in Moscow in June 2012.
