Libyan pro-government forces say they have discovered a special prison in Sirte set up by the Islamic State (ISIS / Daesh / ISIL) terrorist group for prisoners it had condemned to death.
The building contained various small cells with ventilation ducts but no windows, according to the pro-government forces, who are loyal to Libya's UN-backed Government of National Accord. The prison was located close to "Martyrs' Square", known as Green Square under the regime of former dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
The pro-government forces say the square was used by the ISIS terrorist group for beheadings and crucifixions.
The ISIS militants gathered Sirte residents in the square by force to watch horrific sentences handed down by the group, according to the pro-government fighters.
Sirte has seen intense clashes in the last few months between government forces and ISIS fighters, who gained a foothold in the country following the power struggle and security vacuum left in the wake of the downfall of Gadhafi's regime in 2011.
Efforts to bring unity to the deeply divided North African country were dealt a major blow last month when the eastern Tobruk parliament voted "no confidence" in the UN-backed government, Tripoli government.
