The forces, which are aligned with Libya’s UN-backed government, launched their campaign to recapture the city in May and have been aided by US air strikes since the beginning of August.
Forces made up mostly of fighters from Misrata, now say they are in the final stages of their campaign to banish IS from the city.
They faced little resistance from militants holed up in a slowly shrinking residential area in the coastal Giza neighborhood and the 600 buildings neighborhood, who have defended themselves with car bombs, sniper fire and land mines.
Pro-government forces are fighting in two fronts, the southern axis and the eastern axis, they are progressing cautiously but say they managed to surround the enemy from the two directions.
ISIS militants are occupying a gradually shrinking area in the town.
Sirte has seen intense fighting in the last few months between government forces and ISIS group fighters, who gained a foothold in the country following the power struggle and security vacuum left in the wake of the downfall of Moammar Gadhafi’s regime in 2011.
