Dahir Adan, a 22-year-old college student who was born in Africa before moving to the US 15 years ago, was identified as the attacker by his father. The Somali knifeman, 22, called himself during rampage at Minnesota Mall “a soldier of the Islamic State” stabbing 9 people after checking they weren't Muslim.

Local Police sources said the assailant asked people if they are Muslim before stabbing those who said they are not. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in statement released on Sunday.

Nine were injured with one hospitalized for life-threatening injuries.

Adan’s father, Ahmed Adan, said Adan was born in Mombasa, Kenya, but did not say where the family immigrated from.

ISIS-linked Amaq agency, which follows a pattern of ISIS-related media, claimed the attack was the doing of the terrorist group.

The St. Cloud area is home to one of the state's largest Muslim immigrant populations and tensions have flared in the past.

According to CNN, earlier this year nine Somali-Minnesotans were convicted or pleaded guilty in a plot to travel to Syria to join ISIS, Daily Mail reports.

In previous years, a group of men left to join Al-Shabaab, a group which seeks to turn Somali into an Islamist state, CNN reported.
