Dramatic pictures showed firefighters and journalists running from fast moving flames.
The flames reached a farm and also destroyed a number of buildings around a school, but the building itself was saved. Large areas of forest have been burned.
The fires have been made worse by hot and dry weather that according to forecasts wasn't likely to change until later on Wednesday night.
A state of emergency was declared in the region a week ago, AP reported.
