The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has called on the international community to help resettle the Syrian refugees.
“We have been asking not only the countries of the region but all countries in the world to have their borders open to Syrian refugees and asked for enhanced programs of burden sharing with the host countries of the region,” said Antonio Guterres in the Turkish capital city of Ankara on Tuesday.
The UN official also urged the creation of “more legal avenues for Syrian refugees to be able to access safety in other parts of the world.”
Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fuelled by Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of over 200,000 people, according to reports. New figures show that over 76,000 people, including thousands of children, lost their lives in Syria last year.
